This spring, the Set Sail Costa Brava Camp evolves to offer a unique experience: marine environment exploration in Costa Brava. Until now, the camp focused on dinghy sailing, but this year we take it a step further by combining navigation, observation, and experimentation. Over four intense days, participants will embark on an adventure where sport, fun, and science merge under the guidance of expert sailing instructors and our biologist, Raquel Domínguez, who will lead the interpretation of observations and sample collection. 

The Costa Brava, with its Mediterranean coastline, is a true biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. However, this paradise faces major challenges due to mass tourism, overfishing, and climate change. As the saying goes, “You can only protect what you know”. Our mission is to open participants’ eyes to the ecological richness of the Mediterranean, often invisible to the inexperienced eye but essential to life in this environment.

Exploration Program: 4 Days of Adventure 

Day 1: The Physical Environment and Oceanography 

On the first day, we will focus on understanding the physical environment we navigate. We will learn about wind direction, waves, currents, water clarity, salinity, and temperature. Understanding these variables will help us grasp how they affect both navigation and marine life. We will discover how oceanographic science has made life easier, from ancient explorations to modern technologies that help us better understand the sea. 

Day 2: Life in the Water and Plankton 

This day is dedicated to the organisms that inhabit the sea. Besides fish and other visible marine creatures, we will learn about seabed animals like sea urchins, starfish, and sea cucumbers, as well as seabirds that soar above our coasts. Beyond the obvious, we will explore the microscopic world of plankton, tiny organisms that form the base of the marine food chain. Using specialized nets, we will collect plankton and analyze it with tabletop magnifiers, uncovering a hidden universe of microscopic algae, small crustaceans, and larvae of various species. 

Day 3: The Beach and Human Impact 

We will examine the beach as a living and dynamic ecosystem. We will analyze how sand is formed, the influence of underwater seagrass meadows, and human impact, such as the effects of ports and pollution on coastal erosion. We will also investigate plastic waste that reaches our beaches and its origins, addressing key questions: 

• What types of plastics do we find on the beach? 

• Where do they come from? 

• How can we prevent them from reaching the sea? 

Through this observation, we will foster greater environmental awareness and commitment to the protection of the marine environment. 

Day 4: Sailing Journey and Application of Knowledge 

To wrap up the experience, we will embark on a sailing journey where we will put all our newly acquired knowledge into practice. We will navigate with a fresh perspective, gaining a deeper understanding of the Mediterranean landscape in Costa Brava. The more we explore, the more we appreciate the beauty and importance of our surroundings. In this ecosystem, we all coexist, including creatures that have lived in these waters long before humanity.
